LIBRARY: Your child may go to the library everyday if he/she needs more books to read. They are allowed to check out three library books in second grade, and I ask that at least two of them accelerated reader books. Mrs. Greene will give instructional library lessons weekly pertaining to a current area of study we are doing in the classroom.
CHANGE OF PLANS: If your child has a change of plans for after school (going to a friend’s house, scouts, etc.) I must have a note, or you can call the office at 484-2455 by 3:00.
BIRTHDAYS: We love them! If your child wishes to bring treats to share, they may be brought in the morning, or dropped off later. Parties will usually be held at the end of the day (around 2:45). We currently have 21 students in our class.
SHOW AND TELL: We don’t have a show and tell time in second grade, but anything that the children have at home or find that pertains to a unit of study we are doing can be brought in to share. Please have your child leave all toys at home.
QUESTIONS OR CONCERNS: I am usually available daily from 10:10-11:10. Please feel free to call (484-2455) or email ([email protected]) if you have any questions.
HOMEWORK: Each Friday a homework sheet with daily activities will be sent home. I ask that you supervise (or in some cases participate in) their homework, sign it, and return it the following Friday. It is important that your child does the work, as it reinforces everything they are learning at school. If students fall behind on daily work, I will send it home to be completed and returned the next day. Make-up work will also be given when students miss class due to illness, an appointment, etc. I can leave it in the office to be picked up, or send it with another student. Please just let the office know which you prefer when you call to let them know your child will be absent.
SPELLING: Along with the homework sheets on Fridays, I will send home the next week’s list of spelling words. You can also visit the Spelling City website found on my webpage which will allow your child to practice the spelling words in a variety of activities. The test will be each Friday.
GROUPING: To better meet students’ academic needs, the second grade teachers will group the students with similar instructional needs in language arts.
CORRECTIONS: I find this is one of the most effective teaching tools. Although it takes a lot of my time, I believe children learn from correcting their mistakes. Any papers they bring home should have been corrected and ‘okayed’ by me at school. I try to monitor this, but I’m sure I miss some once in a while. Please help me by watching for papers that aren’t corrected and have your child correct them at home and return them to school.
BOOKBAGS: Please make it a routine to check your child’s book bag each evening. Try to take a few minutes to look at your child’s papers to see how he/she is progressing. Sometimes I send a note home pertaining to the next day, so it is important to establish a habit of emptying the book bag daily.
STAR OF THE WEEK: Each week we will honor a classmate. A note will be sent home several days before it is your child’s week. I encourage your child to bring six (or so) family photos and anything special to them. I will display the items on a bulletin board during their week as our star.
ACCELERATED READER: The children are encouraged to read whenever they have a spare minute. They may take A.R. tests on computers in the classroom during non-instructional times throughout the day. I try to offer small incentives throughout the year to motivate them to read A.R. books and take the comprehension tests over the stories. I will be working with your son/daughter to encourage them to choose books at their level and monitor their own comprehension score. Our school goal is for comprehension to be at 80% or above.
READING TESTS: The reading series that we use has weekly tests over the story.
